Ask An Apprentice - Chloe Thompson

How long have you been at Lentells and what level are you working towards?

I have been at Lentells for just over 3 years now and have just completed my level 4 AAT qualification.

Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship in accountancy?

During my time at college, I participated in some work experience at Lentells in the Taunton office and this where I developed my desire to learn more about the accountancy route.

After college and after taking a Gap year, I aspired to further my education and start my career as an accountant. I believed the best way to do this was through acquiring an AAT qualification whilst gaining experience through an apprenticeship. I felt confident in my mathematical and problem solving abilities which aligned well with the positions requirements and knew I had the potential to become a very competent accountant through the guidance of an apprenticeship.

How does the apprenticeship scheme work?

As an apprentice, I worked four full days at the office and I went to college on one set day each week to study towards my qualification. Learning at college alongside doing the practical work in the office was very beneficial as it meant you could apply the theory into your work and develop a better understanding with regards to why we follow certain procedures and how it all works. Within the office you are assigned a trainer who will help you with your work when needed and help you progress in your role. At college you will have a dedicated tutor who will help you with all of the academic side of things.

What type of work are you involved with?

I work within the medical department here at Lentells and my role mostly consists of preparing files which include sets of draft medical accounts and working papers for manager/director review. I also complete a range of other tasks such bookkeeping, completing VAT returns and pension certificates etc. My role here at Lentells is forever developing and I am always taking on new tasks.

Would you recommend doing an apprenticeship?

There are so many benefits to doing an apprenticeship, with the main one of gaining that initial experience that you would not get through college or university alone. So I would definitely recommend choosing to do an apprenticeship to start off your career!
